PAO PAO Multiplayer: Online Co-Op for Four
How PAO PAO multiplayer works: online co-op for up to four players, lobby codes, what's in the demo, and why local split-screen isn't offered.

Table of Contents
PAO PAO's multiplayer is online co-op for up to four players total — you plus up to three friends. There is no split-screen or same-screen option: the official Steam page lists "Online Co-op" as a feature and describes the game as playable "solo or in co-op with up to three friends," and a developer reply in the Steam discussions from February 2025 said a local co-op mode was not planned at that time.
One timing caveat matters more than any other: as of 2026-10-19 the official Steam page gives a planned release date of October 26, 2026 and offers only the demo to download, so everything below describes co-op as it exists in the demo build.
What you actually do together
The developer's own description frames co-op as a shared restaurant plus a shared town. In practice that means:
- Running the kitchen together. The restaurant section is explicitly built for "solo or co-op with up to 3 other players," with equipment to install and a menu to assemble.
- Splitting up. The page suggests dividing to explore different parts of town rather than staying in one group.
- Skipping work entirely. Boat races, basketball, and water guns are named as things friends can do instead of cooking.
The Early Access FAQ on the same page confirms the shipped intent: "playable solo or in co-op with up to four players," with the same restaurant, farming, fishing, gathering, and NPC interaction available in a shared session.

Joining a session
The demo patch notes published on Steam on 2026-09-18 describe the joining flow in general terms: sessions load faster, ping is steadier, and lobby codes can be entered using the Steam keyboard (that note sits under the Steam Deck and controller heading). The 2026-10-01 patch adds that joining private lobbies and the world preview shown when joining a session were both fixed.
Those notes don't spell out exact menu labels or a button-by-button path, so the general pattern appears to be a host sharing a lobby code that other players enter — but no specific screen name should be treated as certain.
Known rough edges
The same two patch notes are the most honest picture of what co-op has struggled with. The September demo patch fixed infinite loading screens when joining, black screens and crashes when the host or another player left, and beds that trapped players (sleep was moved to server-side logic). The October patch followed up with network performance and synchronisation work, plus fixes for item duplication on garden beds, chests, and dirt piles, money desyncs "caused by poor connections," and items vanishing when a player leaves mid-edit.
If a join hangs or a session desyncs, updating to the newest demo build is the first thing worth checking, since both patches specifically targeted joining. Restarting the game or verifying files through Steam are ordinary PC steps that are reasonable to try; the patch notes don't describe any in-game repair or reconnect option.

Voice chat
Voice chat exists as a setting rather than as a store-page feature: the 2026-10-01 patch lists "Added voice chat settings" among its additions. The official Steam page's feature list does not mention voice chat as of 2026-10-19, so treat it as a work-in-progress option and check the in-game settings menu rather than the store listing.
Platforms, storefronts, and saves
As of 2026-10-19, the official Steam page lists Windows as the only platform, and it does not mention cross-platform play. An Epic Games Store listing for "Pao Pao", also credited to ArtDock, describes a 1–4 player co-op sandbox with online multiplayer, though its written description differs noticeably from the Steam page, so use the Steam page as the reference for the version described here.
On saves: the 2026-09-18 demo patch note states that demo saves can be transferred to the full version, which matters if you build a co-op town now and want to keep it after launch.

How many players can play PAO PAO together?
Four total. The store description says "co-op with up to three friends," and the Early Access FAQ says "up to four players."
Can I play PAO PAO multiplayer right now?

Does PAO PAO multiplayer have voice chat?
The 2026-10-01 patch notes list added voice chat settings, but the official Steam page does not list voice chat as a feature as of 2026-10-19. Check the in-game settings for what your build actually offers.
